Painting Mediums
There is vast array of mediums and additives available and their uses only become aparent with experience.
Linseed oil
For Oil painting, the essentials are: Linseed oil, and turpentine (or white spirit). Linseed oil is used to thin the paints and to help them flow. Turpentine is also used as a mixing and thinning aid, and for cleaning up after a painting session.

Acrylic Mediums
Winsor & Newton Galeria Mediums were developed to meet the evolving expressive needs of artists. Painting is often as much about texture and "feel" as it is about the "look" of the image. Galeria mediums help the artist explore the tactile as well as the visual properties of acrylics.
The product range includes four categories: Textures, Mediums, Primers, and Varnishes. Compatible with all Winsor & Newton acrylic colors, they can also be combined with each other to provide infinite possibilities for the artist.
Acrylic Retarder — This translucent gel extends the drying time of acrylic colors.
Black Lava Texture Gel — This gel contains fine particles of black flint. Use alone for colorless results, or mix with acrylic color. It can be overpainted.
Extender — This medium increases and extends paint volume economically. It maintains opacity compared to Gloss Medium.
Flow Improver — This medium increases the flow and workability when mixed with acrylic color or medium on non-absorbent surfaces. Unlike water, it does not reduce color strength.
Glass Beads Texture Gel — This gel contains tiny, colorless glass beads to create effects such as air bubbles in water. Use it alone or with acrylic paint.
Gloss Medium — This preparation changes the handling properties and visual finish of acrylic colors, imparting a gloss finish. Color consistency is maintained while improving flow and transparency, and colors remain usable slightly longer.
Heavy Carvable Modeling Paste — Heavy Carvable Modeling Paste can be sanded or carved on rigid or flexible surfaces. Depth can be built up in layers by allowing it to dry. It can be mixed with color or overpainted when dry, and applied with a palette knife.
Heavy Structure Gel — This gel is ideal for use with acrylic color to create moderate to heavy impasto structure with good peak retention. Mix with acrylic color to increase gloss, transparency, and structure without any texture particles. Apply with a palette knife or brush. Heavy Structure Gel maintains a satin finish.
Iridescent Medium — Mix with acrylic color or apply over the top of dry color to give a unique effect of "light interference." Use on a variety of surfaces to create stunning pearlescent effects.
Matte Medium — This preparation changes the handling properties and visual finish of acrylic colors, imparting a matte finish. Color consistency is maintained while improving flow and transparency, and colors remain usable slightly longer.
Mineral Texture Gel — This gel contains medium-sized dark gray pumice particles. It produces a strongly textural, variegated surface.
Modeling Paste — Modeling paste is a fine texture paste with soft, yet thick, sculptural consistency. Depth can be built up in layers by allowing it to dry. It can be mixed with color or overpainted when dry, and applied with a palette knife.
Sand Texture Gel — This gel contains fine particles of natural sand. Use alone for colorless results or mix with acrylic color. It can be overpainted.
Structure Gel — This gel is ideal for use with acrylic color to create moderate to heavy impasto structure with good peak retention. Mix with acrylic color to increase gloss, transparency, and structure without any texture particles. Apply with a palette knife or brush. Heavy Structure Gel maintains a satin finish. >> Winsor & Newton
