The best inexpensive painting surfaces are ready-primed canvas board. Ready primed paper, which you can mount yourself, is also available as loose sheets or in pad form.
Traditional canvas as it has two distinct advantages over other types of painting surfaces: it can be assembled on stretcher pieces to virtually any sizes without being too heavy, and it also provides 'give' for brush movement. which is lacking with a rigid surface.
Traditional artists' canvas is made from linen, but the less expensive cotton fabric has gained popularity. The artist first prepares a wooden frame called a "stretcher" or "strainer". The difference between the first and second is that stretchers are slightly adjustable, while strainers are rigid and lack adjustable corner notches. The canvas is then pulled across the wooden frame and tacked or stapled tightly to the back edge.
Canvas is a supporting mechanism for many paintings, especially, oil painting because canvas is a very bulky, rough and resilient cloth. Canvas painting is a very pain-staking and lengthy process that can be easily done by skilled and experienced painters. One thing that needs to be kept in mind in canvas painting is that the fabric must be properly stretched out so as to get smooth layers of paint onto the canvas.
